In this episode of the Palestine Podcast, Sawsan Zaher, Amir Abo Kweder and Omar Shakir discuss the experience of the Palestinian Citizens of the Israel. They are those who managed survive the 1947-49 Nakba and stayed inside what would become the Apartheid State of Israel and their descendants. They make up some 20% of the population of Israel today.
These Palestinian communities have faced decades of ongoing and systematic discrimination and dispossession, with dozens of laws curtailing their basic freedoms and human rights, all of which were strengthened and constitutionally legitimised by the Jewish Nation State Basic Law passed less than 2 years ago.
About the speakers
Sawsan Zaher is a senior lawyer and has been working with, and since 2018 has been the deputy general director of Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel.
Amir Abo Kweder is a social and political activist from the Naqab, founder and spokesman of the local committee of the Azzarnug village.
Omar Shakir is the Israel and Palestine Director at Human Rights Watch, and investigates human rights abuses in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.
