The Aida Youth Center is located in Aida Refugee Camp, Bethlehem. It was founded in 1968 with the main purpose of serving the local community – especially its children and youth. It is home to nearly 6,000 Palestinians, all displaced from their homes in 27 neighbouring villages since 1948.
Conditions in the camp are overcrowded and under-resourced, with poor sewage, electricity and water networks and the camp is subject to regular military attacks from both land and air.
The centre is one of the few places where kids can go in the camp to learn creative and social skills, including dancing, athletics, reading, music, football and so much more. These activities help the kids’ mental health enormously and provide a sense of normalcy in the high-pressure, often violent situation they have been thrown into.
Sadly, the center in danger of shutting down due to a lack of funds. They rely on volunteers to keep the center running but it is becoming more difficult every day.
For more information on the center, please visit their website: http://www.aidacenter.org/.
Come along for a bop to help a good cause.
