[Belfast] Film Screening: Lemon Tree (Queens Uni Pal-Soc)
The Queen’s University Belfast Palestine Solidarity Society would like to cordially invite you to our first film screening of the Year.
Our film is entitled Lemon Tree and it displays a story that is reflective of a true story that really happened in Israel/Palestine.
Synopsis: Salma, a Palestinian widow, has to stand up against her new neighbor, the Israeli Defence Minister, when he moves into his new house opposite her lemon grove, on the green line border between Israel and the West Bank.
The Israeli “security” forces are quick to declare that Salma’s trees pose a threat to the Minister’s safety and issues orders to uproot them.
Together with Ziad Daud, her yougn Palestinian lawyer, Salma goes all the way to the Israeli Supreme Court to try and save her trees. Her struggle raises the interest of Nira Navon, the Defense minister’s wife, who is trapped in her new home and in an unhappy life.
Despite their differences and the Borders between them the two women develop an invisible bond, while forbidden ties grow stronger between Salma and Ziad.
Salma’s legal and personal journey lead her deep into the complex, dark and sometimes funny chaos of the ongoing struggle in the Middle East, in which all players find themselves alone in their struggle to survive.
The society would love it if you could attend this film screening it is FREE!
The film itself is made by an Israeli who decided to capture the very essence of the attachment Palestinians have to their land and the cruelty of the occupation that destroys this sometimes life dependent connection.
It will be held on the 15th of November 2011 at 19:30pm in the Queen’s University Medical Biology Centre
The lecture Theatre is still to be confirmed however it will deffinitely be in the Medical Biology Centre (MBC) where several of our society members will be there to direct you to the correct lecture theatre for the film screening.
There will be a discussion and Q/A session held after the film by QUB Palestine Solidarity Society President Gary Spedding who is a freelance journalist and long term activist in both Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories having extensive knowledge on the issue displayed in the film that occurs far too regularly in Palestine.
