In Pictures: Palestinian Prisoners’ Day protest in Dublin

On Thursday 16th April the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a solidarity action for Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli jails at the top of Grafton Street. For an hour members and supporters, including many from the Palestinian community stood with placards, banners and flags in very effective visual display to get the message out to the public about the appalling plight of the Palestinian prisoners. According to Addameer, the Palestinian prisoner support and human rights association, as of 1st February 2015 (the latest date for which figures are available) there were 6,000 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails. Of these, 454 were held under Administrative Detention (indefinitely renewable internment without charge or trial), 163 were minors, and 25 were female. According to Addameer, the Palestinian prisoner support and human rights association, as of 1st October 2014 there were 6,500 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails. Of these, 500 were held under Administrative Detention (indefinitely renewable internment without charge or trial), 182 were minors, and 19 were female. Action Item: Stop G4S – Ask Minister to reject G4S tender for JobPath due to complicity in Israeli human rights violations

The Anglo-Danish security firm G4S is one of a number of private companies bidding for the JobPath contract with the Irish state. Amongst other things, G4S is notorious for its operations and service provision within the Israeli prison system. IMPORTANT UPDATE: It was announced on Friday 6th June by G4S that it will pull out of the Israeli prison regime within three years. Today, Thursday April 17th is Palestinian Prisoners’ Day, and to mark the occasion the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign will be hosting two events in Dublin – A vigil from 5-7pm outside St. Stephen’s Green to highlight private security firm G4S’ complicity with Israeli abuses in apartheid’s prison regime. Report: Israeli Apartheid Week 2014

Between 1st and 8th March, Ireland took part in the 10th annual Israeli Apartheid Week with a series of events including meetings and protests organised by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC). On Saturday 1st March, the Dublin IPSC branch of the kicked off  IAW with a Boycott Israeli Goods day of action. We visited four city centre supermarkets, making consumers aware of their presence, the connection between these products and the occupation of Palestine and asking people to boycott them. According to Addameer, the Palestinian prisoner support and human rights association, as of 1st August 2013, there were 5,068 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails. Of these, 134 were held under Administrative Detention (indefinitely renewable internment without charge or trial), 195 were minors, and 13 were female. The Israeli human rights organization Yesh Din last week published statistics regarding investigations by the Israeli Military Police Criminal Investigations Department (MPCID) into the circumstances surrounding the death of Palestinians since September 2000, as well as figures for convictions and penalization relating to these incidents. This is what those figures look like: According to B’Tselem, at least 6,660* Palestinians have been killed to date by the Israeli occupation military forces in the occupied Palestinian territories since September 2000. On Wednesday 20th February 2013, the TCD Department of Sociology in collaboration with the Centre for Post-Conflict Justice at TCD hosted a public lecture, Surveillance, Fear and Israeli Colonialism by Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, a leading expert in the field of human rights and women’s rights in Israel/Palestine. This talk delivered by Palestinian member of the Israeli Parliament Haneen Zoabi MK was part of a tour organised by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and took place on August 7th 2012 in Wynn’s Hotel to a standing room only audience of over 160 people.
