On July 11th, the Irish Seanad will be presented with a unique opportunity for Ireland to be at the forefront of ensuring international law is respected and states, including Israel, do not profit from the occupation of other countries. Sen. Frances Black’s Control of Economic Activities (Occupied Territories) Bill 2018 seeks to prohibit the import and sale of goods, services and natural resources originating in illegal settlements in occupied territories. It is imperative that people use this rare opportunity to lobby Senators and local TDs, especially Fianna Fail representatives. On 30th March 1976 Israeli military forces shot and killed six young Palestinian citizens of Israel. These young men were among thousands protesting the Israeli government’s expropriation of Palestinian land. Israel continues to expand its illegal settlements in occupied Palestinian territory, forcing Palestinians from their land. Palestinians also face dispossession and displacement inside Israel. Join us this Saturday 30th March in Cork and Dublin to commemorate Land Day and celebrate Palestinian resistance to Israel’s ongoing land expropriation, colonization, occupation and apartheid. In September the Palestinian Authority will ask the UN to recognise the State of Palestine within the borders of the 1949 ceasefire lines. This request is an attempt to mobilise the legitimacy of the international community to bring to an end the occupation of the Palestinian Territories and the associated violations of the human, political and democratic rights of the Palestinian people. The two briefing papers below survey the ‘state’ of Palestine today, from both political and human rights perspectives. The papers outline the effect, and highlight the widespread, enduring and systematic nature of violations of Palestinian rights, and make … Continue reading →
