An article appeared in The Irish Sun yesterday which was headlined “Tesco: We’ve axed fruit from Israel”. This headline is very misleading. This statement from Tesco is simply a reaffirmation of Tesco’s previously held position that they won’t use settlement products in their Tesco brand range. While this is to be welcomed by Palestinian rights campaigners, it unfortunately does not say anything about not stocking settlement goods from other brands, nor about refusing to deal with complicit companies that have operations in the illegal settlements (eg Mehadrin). On Saturday 1st March, the Dublin branch of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign kicked off Israeli Apartheid Week 2014 with a Boycott Israeli Goods day of action. We visited four city centre supermarkets, making consumers aware of their presence, the connection between these products and the occupation of Palestine and asking people to boycott them. We also handed in letters of protest to the management of each store, asking them to cease sticking Israeli goods. On Saturday the 31st March members of the IPSC Cork branch engaged in a demonstration to promote the BDS campaign among the public. Members of the IPSC group met in Grand Parade at 1pm with microphones, Palestinian flags, a banner and distributed leaflets to members of the public. The leaflets show the most commonly sold Israeli products and brands and can be used as a reminder when shopping in super-markets.
