Palestinian child prisoner Ahed Tamimi finally free – the struggle for justice continues

There were tears and joy as, her spirit unbroken, young Palestinian hero Ahed Tamimi was this morning released from eight months in the Israeli occupation’s prisons, finally reunited with her family and her people. Her mother Nariman was released alongside her, where they were greeted rapturously by supporters. Ahed was jailed for the ‘crime’ of slapping an Israeli occupation solider that had invaded her village. An occupation soldier who shot a wounded Palestinian man dead on camera received a sentence of just 9 months. Today, on the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Political Prisoners, more than 150 European trade unions, political parties, human rights organizations and faith groups from over 16 European countries issued a call urging the EU to uphold its legal responsibilities and exclude Israeli military companies from EU Framework Programs. Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) Chairperson Fatin Al Tamimi was a speaker alongside the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, author Nell Regan, the indomitable community workers Rita Fegan and Fidelma Bonass at an International Women’s Day event in Dublin’s Richmond Barracks, organised by the St. Michaels Estate Family Resource Centre. Ms. Tamimi’s speech praised the role of women in the Palestinian fight for freedom, justice and equality, and located the struggle for Palestinian liberty within the broader struggle against oppression and injustice everywhere.
