Press watchdog vindicates BDS movement over “factually inaccurate” Indo piece

A vindication for the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS), and particularly the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) as the Press Ombudsman rules that a hatchet job piece by the Irish Independent‘s Ian O’Doherty was “factually inaccurate” in relation to two slurs on the movement. The complaint was made to the Ombudsman’s office by journalism lecturer Harry Browne, who is also a founder member of Academics for Palestine, a group of scholars that advocates an academic boycott of Israeli institutions. In a column on 24th June, Mr. O’Doherty  described the BDS movement as being “loud and shrill in their calls … Continue reading

Israel’s system of permanent violence: The new Palestinian uprising in context

There has been an upsurge of violence in the Palestine-Israel region since October 1st. Settler attacks on Palestinians, which had been running at between 50 and 80 per month, have surged to over 120 attacks in the first week of October. These attacks include firebombings, shootings, burning crops and stoning houses – often under the protection of the army.[1] Israeli army and police have brutally attacked West Bank Palestinian demonstrators, with over 1,300 people injured by live and rubber-coated bullets. Against this background of widespread colonial violence against Palestinians, condemned by human rights groups like Amnesty International, there have been … Continue reading

Lies, Damned Lies and the Mainstream Media: The curious case of the cancellation of the Israeli Feis

In the aftermath of the announced cancellation of the Israeli Feis Irish dancing competition last week, many mainstream media outlets have been quick to regurgitate the organisers’ claims that it was cancelled due to ‘threats’ – without offering any evidence of said threats. The IPSC has already debunked, at great length, the defamatory claims of the Carey Academy – but the media response deserves a critical examination. For example, the Irish Independent published a story by David Kearns online under the headline “Israeli feis cancelled after threats by ‘Irish supporters of Palestine’”. Thus the headline assumes the veracity of these … Continue reading

8 things you may have missed this week in Palestine

Irish media continues to frequently ignore important stories emerging from Palestine-Israel, stories that are vital to context setting and framing during those times when the issue actually does hit international headlines. By ignoring such stories, which expose the true nature of Palestinian life under military occupation and apartheid, the media can only be considered to be complicit via their silence. Therefore the IPSC continues with our new weekly round up of the most important stories that you may have missed if your only source of information is the Irish mainstream media. #1. Israel pressures UN to remove it from a … Continue reading

Netanyahu’s Victory Means It’s Time To Intensify BDS: 7 Simple Actions You Can Take To Support Justice For Palestine

Mass murdering war criminal, Benjamin Netanyahu, the butcher of Gaza, has emerged victorious in the Israeli general election, foisted to victory on the back of racist campaigning and a pledge for the permanent occupation of Palestine . As the IPSC pointed out, it really didn’t matter who came out on top in the election, the net result for Palestinians would still be occupation and apartheid – but the outcome is significant nonetheless. That Netanyahu and his party topped the poll for the third time in a row, and that the Zionist right in general did so well, should serve as … Continue reading

Watch & Read: IPSC hands 10,000 strong petition to RTE concerning problematic coverage of Palestine-Israel issue

On Wednesday 10th September members of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign handed in a 10,000 strong petition to RTÉ, Ireland’s national broadcaster, calling for more balanced, comprehensive and consistent coverage of the situation in the Palestine-Israel region. The petition calls on RTÉ: “to cease ignoring the Palestine issue in both news coverage and commentary. RTÉ withholds from Irish people all information about the Israeli army’s daily persecution, harassment and even killing of Palestinians (including children) within the occupied West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip. RTÉ has been silent about successive waves of hunger strikes among Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, … Continue reading

Context and collective punishment: The aftermath of recent killings in the Palestine-Israel region

The IPSC deplores the brutal murder of the three young Israeli citizens whose remains were found on Monday near Hebron and the apparent ‘revenge’ murder of a Palestinian teenager reportedly carried out by Israeli extremists early Wednesday. Equally the IPSC deplores the deaths of all civilians killed in this conflict of unequals, including the six civilians killed by Israeli occupation forces since the Israeli teenagers were kidnapped. The IPSC is concerned that the unjustifiable killings of the three Israelis will be used to justify further killings, destruction and illegal settlement building in the occupied Palestinian territories (OPT) by the Israeli … Continue reading

Baseball Cats And Dead Palestinians: The Irish media and the killings of Palestinian teens

Kevin Squires, National Coordinator of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign has a written an article for the Irish magazine Rabble which looks at the Irish media and its shameful lack of coverage of the cold-blooded murder of two unarmed Palestinian teenagers last week, even though the killings were caught on video. Below is an excerpt [I]t seems the heavily edited Reuters piece wasn’t deemed newsworthy enough for the Irish Times website, where perhaps an expanded report could have been published, and the videos even embedded for readers to see for themselves. On the other hand, a fluff piece – with accompanying … Continue reading

Infographic: Peace? What Peace? Israel’s ceaseless attacks on Palestinian people and property (1 Aug – 23 Sept 2013)

In the past three days, two Israeli soldiers have been killed by Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. These attacks have generated countless headlines, both in Israel and internationally. Alas, the same cannot be said for the 7 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in the weeks since the Palestinian-Israeli ‘peace talks’ reopened at the end of July last (or indeed, the 11 other Palestinians already killed this year). Of course, in the Israeli press and polity, the killings have led to denunciations of Palestinians as not being ‘serious’ about peace. Ignore for a moment the fact that the killings were … Continue reading
