Amnesty condemns Israeli Apartheid and calls for international action to end oppression of Palestinians

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign has praised today’s publication of a detailed new report by Amnesty International showing that Israel is committing the crime against humanity of Apartheid against the Palestinian people. The 211 page report, entitled ‘Israel’s Apartheid Against Palestinians: Cruel System of Domination and Crime Against Humanity’, is the latest in a long line of human rights organisations levelling similar charges against Israel. Over 1,500 Palestinians from neighbourhoods in occupied East Jerusalem are facing threat of forced displacement and home demolitions by Israeli authorities. Children make up a large percentage of the families threatened with homelessness. Recently Israeli courts have ruled in favor of Israeli settlers and given four Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood until May to leave their homes. In the Silwan neighborhoods of Al Bustan and Batin al Hawa, a total of 21 Palestinian families are facing home demolition as soon as May 11th to make way for an Israeli tourist site. Let’s tell G4S’s new owners that collaboration with Apartheid is unacceptable!

Earlier this month, US-based security company Allied Universal acquired G4S, creating the world’s largest security company. #StopG4S was launched by Palestinian civil society organizations in 2012, to support a historic hunger strike by Palestinian political prisoners. Trade unions, churches, and grassroots movements across over 25 countries joined the campaign that cost G4S contracts worth millions of dollars. The #StopG4S campaign has already shown its impact. In December 2016, G4S sold its subsidiary, G4S Israel, to the Israeli equity fund FIMI. Sunset for international law? Israel’s annexation plan and the re-partition of Palestine

From the first of July the government of Israel is planning to bring forth legislation to unilaterally annex Israel’s illegal settlements and the Jordan Valley region of the Palestinian West Bank. This constitutes an area of roughly 30% of the West Bank, and will be in addition to Israel’s already illegal annexations of Palestinian East Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan Heights. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) has welcomed the support from over 140 general election candidates for a series of election pledges supporting justice for the Palestinian people. At least 147 candidates, from most parties and many independents, have signed the three pledges, which were also endorsed collectively by Sinn Féin, The Green Party, Solidarity, People Before Profit, Rise, and The Workers’ Party. EU governments must ban trade with illegal Israeli settlements say major European trade unions

34 European trade union organisations representing millions of workers have written to the European Commission and European governments demanding a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine. The signatories include nine trade union groups based in Ireland: the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU); Fórsa; the Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA); Mandate; the Communications Workers Union (CWU), Unison NI, Unite the Union, and both Belfast and Derry Trade Union Councils. A petition signed by over 7,000 people which asks Ireland’s Eurovision entrant Sarah McTernan to pull out of the song contest in Apartheid Israel this week has been delivered to the singer ahead of her scheduled appearance in this Thursday’s semi-final. Ireland must play no part in the art-washing of Israeli oppression. Palestinian artists, journalists and civil society groups have issued a call for internationals to boycott the 2019 Eurovision due to be staged in Israel, due to Israel’s “regime of military occupation, settler-colonialism and apartheid” which is “shamelessly using Eurovision as part of its official ‘Brand Israel’ strategy”.
