Subject: Double Standards and Ireland’s human rights obligations re: Palestine and Israel On 13th November 2018 Richard Boyd Barrett TD asked Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to condemn Israeli acts of aggression in Gaza. RTÉ asked to support call for ban on Eurovision broadcast in illegal Israeli settlements

On Thursday 6th December, to coincide with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)’s General Assembly, the Irish Campaign to Boycott the Eurovision in Apartheid Israel 2019 wrote to the Director General of RTÉ, Dee Forbes, Rory Coveney, Strategic Advisor to the Director General, and Michael Kealy, Head of RTÉ’s delegation for Eurovision, asking them to call on the EBU not to broadcast any Eurovision events into Israel’s illegal settlements in occupied Palestine. ‘Great March of Return’ meeting in Portadown with Asad Abushark

On Saturday, 1st December, the Portadown branch of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign was privileged to host Asad Abushark as the guest speaker at a public meeting in the Drumcree Community Centre. Asad Abushark is an official spokesperson for the Palestinian people’s Great March of Return. Since March of this year, over 200 people have been shot dead and thousands more have been shot and wounded by Israeli military forces while taking part in weekly March of Return protests. Minister of State and 50 Irish lawmakers call for arms embargo on Israel

In a letter published today in the Irish Times newspaper, Minister of State Finian McGrath and fifty other Irish TDs and Senators have called for an arms embargo to be placed on Israel, and for “an end to the bi-lateral arms trade between Ireland and the apartheid state”. 20 more public figures join Irish Eurovision boycott campaign as RTE announces call for submissions

The Irish Campaign to boycott the Eurovision in Israel 2019, has secured the support of a further 20 public figures including actor Stephen Rea, and musical artists Mary Coughlan, Luka Bloom and the members of Kíla , have called on RTÉ not to participate and for musicians not to make submissions to the contest. The news comes just days after the Irish National Broadcaster RTÉ announced its call for entrants for the song contest. On Wednesday 26th September, representatives of the Irish campaign for a boycott of Eurovision 2019 in Israel held a meeting with the Director General of RTÉ Dee Forbes.
