The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) reiterated calls for the cancellation of the away leg of the match between the Irish and Israeli U-21 teams, and for the expulsion of the Israeli FA from FIFA and UEFA due to Israel’s ongoing human rights abuses against the Palestinian people, including Palestinian sportspeople. It took three months of hunger strike and the near death of a Palestinian footballer, held for three years without charge or trial under the ‘Unlawful Combatants Law’ which is itself illegal under international law, for the Israeli authorities to agree to a release deal. While we cautiously welcome the deal that should see Mahmoud Sarsak released on 10 July 2012, we are alarmed that Olympic squad goalkeeper Omar Abu Rois and Ramallah player Mohammed Nimr are also being held by Israel without charge. Today, Tuesday 5th June, the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) called on the Irish Government to intervene to save the lives of two Palestinian political prisoners, Mahmoud Sarsak and Akram Rikhawi who have been on hunger strike for 80 days and 55 days respectively. Supporters of Palestine will be organizing a protest at the Irish women’s soccer team European Cup qualifying match with Israel on Saturday, October 22 at Tallaght Stadium.
