UAE-Israel Agreement: An abandonment of Palestinian rights that must be rejected

Last week’s announcement of the normalisation of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates is no cause for celebration. While it should come as little surprise given that friendly relations between the two were an open secret for decades, the formalisation of the agreement is nevertheless paid for in the negation of Palestinian fundamental rights – not least the right to self-determination. Instead of centring Palestinian rights as the pivot upon which to build a just and sustainable peace, this agreement actually does the opposite; it gives important diplomatic cover to Israel’s ongoing violations of these rights. This is … Continue reading

Sunset for international law? Israel’s annexation plan and the re-partition of Palestine

From the first of July the government of Israel is planning to bring forth legislation to unilaterally annex Israel’s illegal settlements and the Jordan Valley region of the Palestinian West Bank. This constitutes an area of roughly 30% of the West Bank, and will be in addition to Israel’s already illegal annexations of Palestinian East Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan Heights. This is an attempt to re-partition Palestine, and represents the latest phase in the ongoing Nakba endured by the Palestinian people. The annexation plan eliminates whatever diminished prospect still exists of achieving a viable sovereign independent state. In its … Continue reading

Ahead of AXA’s AGM, let’s tell AXA: Stop financing Israeli apartheid!

French insurance company AXA will hold its annual shareholders’ meeting on June 30. We need to make sure that divestment from Israeli apartheid is at the top of their agenda. Despite claims of social responsibility, AXA has almost tripled its investment in three Israeli banks that fund Israel’s illegal settlements. AXA also owns 9.03% of Equitable Holdings, which invests in five complicit Israeli banks and in Israel’s largest private arms company, Elbit Systems, which touts its weapons and surveillance technologies as “field-tested” on Palestinians. Just recently, the five Israeli banks were named in the United Nations’ list of complicit companies … Continue reading
