In open letter to Sarah McTernan LGBTQ+ activists call for Irish Eurovision Boycott

Today, 16th April 2019, an open letter from LGBTQ+ campaigners calling for Irish singer Sarah McTernan to boycott the Eurovision in Apartheid Israel was published by Gay Community News, Ireland’s leading LGBTQ+ magazine and news website. Signatories to the letter include Ailbhe Smith, Senators David Norris and Fintan Warfield, GLEN founders Cathal Kerrigan and Kieran Rose, poet Sarah Clancy and academics Mary McAuliffe, Ursula Barry and Tina O’Toole. Sligo County Council calls for Irish Boycott of Eurovision

At its monthly meeting this week, Sligo County Council voted to call on RTÉ to boycott this years’ Eurovision Song Contest due to take place in Apartheid Israel. The motion notes that “the Eurovision will be openly used for political and militaristic propaganda purposes” and to whitewash Israel’s “ongoing occupation of Palestinian lands, its continued building of illegal colonial settlements in violation of international law and its human rights abuses and war crimes.” The motion, jointly moved by Cllrs. Israeli Apartheid Week 2019 (23 Feb – 6 March)

The 15th Annual Israeli Apartheid Week will take place in Ireland between 23rd February and 6th March 2019. IAW is an international series of events that seeks to raise awareness about Israel’s apartheid regime over the Palestinian people and build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. It now takes place in over 200 cities across the world, where events such as lectures, film screenings, direct action, cultural performances, postering, among many more help in grassroots organizing for effective solidarity with the Palestinian liberation struggle. NUJ Dublin Broadcasting Branch commits to supporting members refusing to cover Eurovision Song Contest in Israel

The Irish Campaign to Boycott the Eurovision in 2019 in Israel welcomes the motion passed by the Dublin Broadcasting Branch of the NUJ on 29th January whereby it states it “will support any member, working in RTÉ or elsewhere, who chooses to exercise a conscientious objection towards involvement in coverage of the song contest.” The motion was passed by a large majority and represents a recognition that the Eurovision contest in Israel presents serious ethical issues for anyone who cares about human rights. The following letter was sent to the Office of the Taoiseach in December 2018. Subject: Double Standards and Ireland’s human rights obligations re: Palestine and Israel On 13th November 2018 Richard Boyd Barrett TD asked Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to condemn Israeli acts of aggression in Gaza. These acts led to the deaths of 14 people – 12 of them at the hands of Israeli forces.  Amongst widespread Israeli bombing, a TV station was destroyed, a university building and  human rights centre damaged.  Clear attacks on civilian infrastructure against the laws of war. Minister of State and 50 Irish lawmakers call for arms embargo on Israel

In a letter published today in the Irish Times newspaper, Minister of State Finian McGrath and fifty other Irish TDs and Senators have called for an arms embargo to be placed on Israel, and for “an end to the bi-lateral arms trade between Ireland and the apartheid state”.
