Caterpillar jobs announcement in Belfast marred by association with human rights abuses

The announcement of 200 new jobs in an economically deprived area of West Belfast has been widely welcomed. Unfortunately the company providing these jobs, Caterpillar, has a record that is not something to celebrate. Caterpillar is the subject of an international divestment campaign because its equipment has been routinely used by Israel to demolish Palestinian homes and destroy farmland. It is also used in the building of illegal settlements and wall in the occupied Palestinian territories. Furthermore, Caterpillar bulldozers have also killed several people, including the crushing to death of US human rights activist Rachel Corrie ten years ago next … Continue reading

Not just for Christmas, and not just on Facebook – Israel’s racism and hostility towards Palestinians

A “thought for Christmas”, posted by the Israeli Embassy in Dublin on its official Facebook page this week, said that if Jesus Christ and his mother Mary were alive today they would “probably end up being lynched in Bethlehem by hostile Palestinians”. After an outcry and backlash at the racism on display, the post in question was removed and replaced with a mealy-mouthed apology. Subsequently, the entire ‘Israel in Ireland’ Facebook page was removed, at least temporarily. However, for those familiar with Israeli policy and public statements by official Israeli spokespeople and politicians, such derogatory words and overt displays of … Continue reading

10 Years Too Long: Al-Haq campaign examines the effects and illegality of Annexation Wall

As a Palestinian organisation dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), Al-Haq has, for the past ten years, witnessed with growing  concern Israel’s continued construction of what Professor John Dugard, former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories Occupied since 1967, has termed “the Annexation Wall.” Since the outset, the construction of the Wall in the OPT has faced international condemnation on the basis of its illegality under international law. In 2004, the International Court of Justice called on Israel to cease construction of the … Continue reading

The writing is on the Apartheid Wall for CRH

Graffiti artists in Palestine have made it clear to Irish cement multinational CRH what they think of the activities of their Israeli subsidiary Mashav. Mashav, in which CRH holds a 25% stake, own Nesher cement – Israel’s sole cement manufacturing company. Nesher cement is used in the construction of the Apartheid Wall, Israeli settlements and related infrastructure, all declared illegal by the International Court of Justice in its 2004 ruling. CRH is aiding and abetting, and literally concretising, Israel’s apartheid policies against the Palestinian people. For more about CRH’s involvement, please see this section of our website. On Saturday 7th … Continue reading

Action Item: Petition to CRH plc – Stop Cementing Misery in Palestine

PLEASE SIGN THIS IMPORTANT PETITION BY CLICKING HERE. We are asking the Ireland based company, CRH plc, to respect the human rights of the Palestinian people by divesting their 25% share of Israel’s sole cement producer, Nesher Cement Enterprises . This cement is being extensively used in the construction of the illegal West Bank wall and the massive expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied territories of Palestine. These activities are illegal under international law. In order to make way for these construction projects Palestinian homes are being demolished and their farms are being destroyed daily. Life for the Palestinian … Continue reading

‘CRH and the Apartheid Wall Roadshow’ comes to Wexford’s Bullring

People walking into Wexford town’s iconic Bullring on Saturday 24th March 2012 found themselves face to face with sirens, soldiers manning a menacing checkpoint, and a scale model of Israel’s illegal West Bank wall. Luckily it was just part of a street theatre event organised by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) to highlight awareness of the day to day horrors being endured by the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation, and highlighting the role Irish cement multinational CRH plays in the building of Israel’s Apartheid Wall and illegal Jewish-only settlements in the West Bank. To sign the IPSC’s petition calling … Continue reading
