Amid the inevitable deluge of whitewashed eulogies to former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres who died today, it is important to recall his real record in Israeli politics. Shimon Peres was the father of Israel’s illegal nuclear weapons program, and who offered to sell nuclear technology to Apartheid South Africa. In 1986 he oversaw the operation that led to the kidnap and imprisonment of Israeli nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu, who has been a prisoner of Israel in one form or another ever since. Between 1974 and 1977 Peres was Defence Minister when his government continued the building of illegal Israeli … Continue reading →

David Lloyd, the Distinguished Professor, poet, activist and signatory to both the Irish Academics’ and Irish Artists’ pledges to boycott Israel, has a wonderful piece entitled ‘The Malevolence of Occupation’ in the new issue of the Dublin Review of Books. Below is an excerpt, you can read the full piece here. Above all, boycott is an instrument of civil society. We call for a boycott when the means to redress an ongoing injury are denied by the legal or political institutions that ought to intervene. In December 2009, Israel launched its catastrophic “Cast Lead” assault on Gaza ‑ as it … Continue reading →

[Update 05/02/16] Al-Qiq rejects court freeze on detention, continues hunger strike [04/05/2016] As hunger-striking Palestinian journalist Mohammad Al-Qiq nears death in an Israeli prison, the Palestinian Human Rights Organisations Council has added its voice to the international outrage over his continuing internment. Al-Qiq is being held without charge or trial under Israel’s system of administrative detention, and his wife Fayha Shalash has said that “[Mohammad’s] decision is very clear: either free or dead, not in between”. Amnesty International has stated that Israel’s use of non consensual medical intervention in this case is in violation of the prohibition of torture, and … Continue reading →

There has been an upsurge of violence in the Palestine-Israel region since October 1st. Settler attacks on Palestinians, which had been running at between 50 and 80 per month, have surged to over 120 attacks in the first week of October. These attacks include firebombings, shootings, burning crops and stoning houses – often under the protection of the army.[1] Israeli army and police have brutally attacked West Bank Palestinian demonstrators, with over 1,300 people injured by live and rubber-coated bullets. Against this background of widespread colonial violence against Palestinians, condemned by human rights groups like Amnesty International, there have been … Continue reading →

Judging by the reactions of everyone from Benjamin Nethanyahu (responsible for the deaths of over 550 kids in Gaza last year) to Ayelet Shaked (who called called Palestinian kids “little snakes”) to the US State Department (you know, the state that sponsors the murder of Palestinians) to the EU (which continues to be Israel’s number one trading partner) one would swear the the horrific burning to death of Palestinian toddler Ali Saad Dawabsh and the severe maiming of his family by illegal Israeli settler colonialists was an isolated and unpredictable incident, a bizarre aberration from some peaceful norm. If actual … Continue reading →

In the aftermath of the announced cancellation of the Israeli Feis Irish dancing competition last week, many mainstream media outlets have been quick to regurgitate the organisers’ claims that it was cancelled due to ‘threats’ – without offering any evidence of said threats. The IPSC has already debunked, at great length, the defamatory claims of the Carey Academy – but the media response deserves a critical examination. For example, the Irish Independent published a story by David Kearns online under the headline “Israeli feis cancelled after threats by ‘Irish supporters of Palestine’”. Thus the headline assumes the veracity of these … Continue reading →

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign has distributed the following important and informative new briefing paper to members of the Oireachtas, members of the European Parliament and members of local Irish councils. Titled Israel 2015: A government of extremists in charge of an-out-of control military, the paper is an in-depth investigation the extremist nature of the new Israeli government, the shocking views of its leading members, and the appalling recent record of the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza. Finally the document makes a series of recommendations that we believe the Irish government must take to help ensure that Israel is held to … Continue reading →

In the latest of literally thousands of such reports dating back over decades, this week Defence For Children International produced a report entitled ‘Operation Protective Edge: A War Waged on Gaza’s Children’. The findings of the report merely add more weight to the call for an arms embargo on Israel and an end to the Irish arms trade with this rogue state. The report “found overwhelming and repeated evidence of international humanitarian law violations committed by Israeli forces. These included direct attacks on children, and indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks on civilian homes, schools, and residential neighbourhoods”, that “Israel, the world’s … Continue reading →

Irish media continues to frequently ignore important stories emerging from Palestine-Israel, stories that are vital to context setting and framing during those times when the issue actually does hit international headlines. By ignoring such stories, which expose the true nature of Palestinian life under military occupation and apartheid, the media can only be considered to be complicit via their silence. Therefore the IPSC continues with our new weekly round up of the most important stories that you may have missed if your only source of information is the Irish mainstream media. #1. Israel pressures UN to remove it from a … Continue reading →

In March 2015 the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign, in response to a call for suggestions regarding the development of a government ‘National Plan on Business and Human Rights’, submitted the following document to the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. In it we outline what we feel are necessary elements any such plan must incorporate in order to ensure that fundamental Palestinian rights are respected by Irish based-businesses and international businesses that operate within Ireland. You can also download the report as a PDF file here. Submission to the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade call for input … Continue reading →

Human rights and Palestinian solidarity activists frequently mention violations of international law and the commission of war crimes by the state of Israel. The IPSC National Coordinator Kevin Squires took a look at some of these offences in detail for Liberty, the monthly newspaper of SIPTU, the largest trade union in Ireland. It was part of a four page ‘Palestine Special’ in the September edition, which also included contributions from Palestinian lawyer Diana Buttu, Dr. Claudia Saba of Gaza Action Ireland, and Mags O’Brien of Trade Union Friends of Palestine. On Wednesday 10th September members of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign handed in a 10,000 strong petition to RTÉ, Ireland’s national broadcaster, calling for more balanced, comprehensive and consistent coverage of the situation in the Palestine-Israel region. The petition calls on RTÉ: “to cease ignoring the Palestine issue in both news coverage and commentary. RTÉ withholds from Irish people all information about the Israeli army’s daily persecution, harassment and even killing of Palestinians (including children) within the occupied West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip. RTÉ has been silent about successive waves of hunger strikes among Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, … Continue reading →
