Israeli Apartheid Week 2019 (23 Feb – 3 March)

The 15th Annual Israeli Apartheid Week will take place in Ireland between 23rd February and 3rd March 2019. IAW is an international series of events that seeks to raise awareness about Israel’s apartheid regime over the Palestinian people and build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. It now takes place in over 200 cities across the world, where events such as lectures, film screenings, direct action, cultural performances, postering, among many more help in grassroots organizing for effective solidarity with the Palestinian liberation struggle. Watch: Palestinian Freedom Conference – Overcoming the Ongoing Nakba (Dublin, May 2018)

On 12th and 23th May 2018, to mark the 70th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Trade Union Friends of Palestine and BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights were honoured to host an inspiring and action-focused weekend of talks from important voices in the Palestinian struggle for Freedom, Justice and Equality. Sign the Irish Call to Boycott Eurovision 2019 in Israel

Ireland must play no part in the art-washing of Israeli oppression. Palestinian artists, journalists and civil society groups have issued a call for internationals to boycott the 2019 Eurovision due to be staged in Israel, due to Israel’s “regime of military occupation, settler-colonialism and apartheid” which is “shamelessly using Eurovision as part of its official ‘Brand Israel’ strategy”. The Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine & Israel (EAPPI) are seeking participants for their Human Rights Programme in Palestine and Israel EAPPI provides protection by presence, monitors human rights abuses, supports Israeli and Palestinian peace activists and advocates for an end to the occupation. Based in the West Bank and Israel in 2020 for 3 months’ service. Expenses covered and living allowance + benefits offered. NUJ Dublin Broadcasting Branch commits to supporting members refusing to cover Eurovision Song Contest in Israel

The Irish Campaign to Boycott the Eurovision in 2019 in Israel welcomes the motion passed by the Dublin Broadcasting Branch of the NUJ on 29th January whereby it states it “will support any member, working in RTÉ or elsewhere, who chooses to exercise a conscientious objection towards involvement in coverage of the song contest.” The motion was passed by a large majority and represents a recognition that the Eurovision contest in Israel presents serious ethical issues for anyone who cares about human rights. Eurovision: More than 60 LGBTQ+ groups call for boycott of contest in Apartheid Israel

More than 60 queer and trans liberation organizations from nearly 20 countries across Europe and beyond, including from Ireland, are calling on global LGBTQIA communities to boycott the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Israel. The signatories condemn Israel’s “shameful” use of Eurovision, which has a strong following among LGBTQIA communities, to “distract attention from its war crimes against Palestinians” and “forward its pinkwashing agenda, the cynical use of gay rights to distract from and normalize Israel’s occupation, settler colonialism and apartheid.” The statement, initiated by Palestinian queer groups, recalls the 1969 Stonewall Riots symbolizing LGBTQIA resistance against daily harassment and violence, … Continue reading

Happy New Year from Ireland to Palestine! Below are some pictures and a short video from the many solidarity vigils that took place around Ireland this New Year’s Eve to mark the tenth anniversary of the 2008/09 Israeli attack that killed over 1,400 people. Palestinians have asked us to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, so let’s work together even harder to ensure that 2019 is the year the people of Palestine finally enjoy freedom, justice and equality!

Taoiseach’s double standards and Ireland’s human rights obligations re: Palestine and Israel

The following letter was sent to the Office of the Taoiseach in December 2018. Subject: Double Standards and Ireland’s human rights obligations re: Palestine and Israel On 13th November 2018 Richard Boyd Barrett TD asked Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to condemn Israeli acts of aggression in Gaza. RTÉ asked to support call for ban on Eurovision broadcast in illegal Israeli settlements

On Thursday 6th December, to coincide with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)’s General Assembly, the Irish Campaign to Boycott the Eurovision in Apartheid Israel 2019 wrote to the Director General of RTÉ, Dee Forbes, Rory Coveney, Strategic Advisor to the Director General, and Michael Kealy, Head of RTÉ’s delegation for Eurovision, asking them to call on the EBU not to broadcast any Eurovision events into Israel’s illegal settlements in occupied Palestine. The international campaign, acting in solidarity with Palestinian civil society, has widespread support with over 30,000 people signing a European-wide petition demanding the Eurovision not be held in Israel. … Continue reading
