[Derry] March for Gaza

The Derry Anti War Coalition is to go ahead with a demonstration in solidarity with the people of Gaza on Saturday 24 November. The group has asked people to assemble at 2pm in Waterloo Place.

Pro-Palestinian groups, supported by the Irish Congress of Trades Unions, will be gathering at the same time at the City Hall in Belfast.

DAWC chairperson Eileen Webster said: “The bombs have stopped raining down on Gaza for the moment. But nothing has been resolved.

“Time and time again, we have seen lulls in the onslaught against the Palestinian people. But as soon as world attention shifts away, the same oppression returns and makes a new outbreak inevitable. It is not enough for us just to wait around for the next time.

“We want to push ahead with the BDS campaign – for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. This is already the policy of the Irish trades unions and has been endorsed by various political parties and campaigning organisations. But the public profile of the BDS campaign leaves a lot to be desired.

“Some organisations directly involved in the oppression of Palestine – the G4S security company, for example – are also involved with public bodies here. They should be let know in no uncertain terms that many, many thousands of us regard this as unacceptable.

“The DAWC appeals to all supporters of the Palestinian cause to take an hour on Saturday from 2 pm to show their solidarity.”
