Nakba Week 2013: IPSC commemorates the 65th Anniversary of the Palestinian Catastrophe and resistance

Wednesday 15th May 2013 will be the 65th Anniversary of ‘Nakba Day’, the day on which Palestinians all over the world remember the 1947/48 Nakba, the Palestinian Catastrophe which saw the forcible expulsion of over 750,000 indigenous Palestinians from their homes to facilitate the creation of the Zionist State of Israel. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) will be hosting a series of Nakba Week events from 11th – 17th May 2013. The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign is proud to present a speaking tour featuring Palestinian activist, farmer and former political prisoner Mousa Abu Maria. On Wednesday 15th May (Nakba Day) the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a peaceful protest at 9am outside the Global Diaspora Forum which took place in the Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, Killiney, Co. Dublin. The protest was held as one of the speakers during the 9.30am session was Gidi Mark, the CEO of Taglit-Birthright Israel. In Pictures: Moving galllery commemorates Al Nakba in Dublin

On Saturday 11 May 201  the IPSC in Dublin held a ‘Moving Gallery’ which saw people walk from St. Stephen’s Green to the Spire on O’Connell Street carrying large photographs from Al Nakba, Palestinian flags and a giant key – the symbol of Palestinian refugees’ right of return to their homeland. The event  commemorated what Palestinians call Nakba Day which marks the 65thanniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (‘Catastrophe’) which saw the expulsion of over 700,000 Palestinians, forcibly uprooted from their homeland in an act of ethnic cleansing that facilitated the foundation of the State of Israel. On the morning of Wednesday 8 May Irish multinational CRH will held their Annual General Meeting in the Royal Marine Hotel, in Dun Laoghaire. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a small protest outside the venue. The IPSC organised this protest because CRH owns 25% of the Israeli company Mashav Initiative and Development Ltd which, in turn, owns Israel’s sole cement producer Nesher Cement Enterprises Ltd. Nesher provide up to 90% of all cement sold in Israel, including cement used in the construction of Israel’s illegal separation wall in Palestine and illegal settlements and checkpoints. Irish cameraman again shot and injured by Israeli military in the West Bank

This evening, Friday 3rd May, Irish cameraman Tommy Donnellan was shot in the back, leg and arm by the Israeli military while filming a protest in the Palestinian village of Silwad in the occupied West Bank. Mr. Donnellan, who is from near Ballinasloe in Galway travelled to the West Bank in February. Today he sustained three wounds from a rubber-coated steel bullets which punctured his left leg, and bruised his back and upper right arm. A five member cross-party working group from the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council, led by Emer Costello, conducted a visit to the occupied State of Palestine (East Jerusalem and the West Bank) from 27 April to 2 May, taking in the “Freedom and Dignity” Conference in Ramallah on the subject of Palestinian prisoners and the Palestinian people. A message from Cork IPSC, who had organised a hunger strike relay in solidarity with Samer Issawi: As you might already know, Samer Issawi has agreed to stop his hunger strike after signing an agreement with Israeli prisons authorities who promised he will be released to his village Al-A’essaweya in 8 months time. Therefore we have decided to interrupt the relay fasting, for the moment. Professor Haim Bresheeth, a renowned Israeli-born academic and documentary film-maker, will be speaking in colleges in Dublin and Cork next week in support of the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) and its conference resolution supporting an academic boycott of Israel. At its Annual Congress on Thursday 4th April 2013, the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) became the first academic union in Europe to endorse the Palestinian call for an academic boycott of Israel. Report: Hunger for Justice relay hunger strike in solidarity with Samer Issawi ongoing in Cork

Invoking the memory of former mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney, the Cork branch of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign has symbolically joined Palestinian prisoner Samer Issawi in his hunger strike for justice. Having collectively fasted for 24 hours on Saturday 20th April at a gathering in St. Patrick’s Street, members of Cork IPSC have started on a ‘hunger strike relay’, where each person will fast for 24 hours before handing the hunger baton to another member or supporter.
