On Saturday 11 May 201 the IPSC in Dublin held a ‘Moving Gallery’ which saw people walk from St. Stephen’s Green to the Spire on O’Connell Street carrying large photographs from Al Nakba, Palestinian flags and a giant key – the symbol of Palestinian refugees’ right of return to their homeland. The event commemorated what Palestinians call Nakba Day which marks the 65thanniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (‘Catastrophe’) which saw the expulsion of over 700,000 Palestinians, forcibly uprooted from their homeland in an act of ethnic cleansing that facilitated the foundation of the State of Israel. Invoking the memory of former mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney, the Cork branch of the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign has symbolically joined Palestinian prisoner Samer Issawi in his hunger strike for justice. Having collectively fasted for 24 hours on Saturday 20th April at a gathering in St. Patrick’s Street, members of Cork IPSC have started on a ‘hunger strike relay’, where each person will fast for 24 hours before handing the hunger baton to another member or supporter. Earlier today, Good Friday, Irish cameraman Tommy Donnellen was shot in the arm by the Israeli military while filming a protest in the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh in the occupied West Bank. Mr. Donnellan, who is from the Roscommon border, near Ballinasloe travelled to the West Bank last month. Today he sustained a wound from a rubber-coated steel bullet which punctured his upper right arm. Reports from the respected Palestinian Center For Human Rights in Gaza confirm that at least 37 people have now died in Israeli strikes on Gaza since Israel breached a ceasefire brokered by Egypt on Wednesday 14th November. 8 children and 2 women are among the dead. A further 280 have been injured in the bombardment from air, land and sea. On November 14th Israel launched ‘Operation Pillar of Cloud’ on the population of Gaza. The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights has confirmed that 13 people have been killed including 2 children and a pregnant woman and a further 115 have been injured since yesterday. The bombardment has taken the form of airstrikes, mortars from land and shelling from the sea. There have been over 150 strikes in total. On Saturday the 31st March members of the IPSC Cork branch engaged in a demonstration to promote the BDS campaign among the public. Members of the IPSC group met in Grand Parade at 1pm with microphones, Palestinian flags, a banner and distributed leaflets to members of the public. The leaflets show the most commonly sold Israeli products and brands and can be used as a reminder when shopping in super-markets.
