Israeli Apartheid Week 2019 (23 Feb – 3 March)

The 15th Annual Israeli Apartheid Week will take place in Ireland between 23rd February and 3rd March 2019. IAW is an international series of events that seeks to raise awareness about Israel’s apartheid regime over the Palestinian people and build support for the growing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. It now takes place in over 200 cities across the world, where events such as lectures, film screenings, direct action, cultural performances, postering, among many more help in grassroots organizing for effective solidarity with the Palestinian liberation struggle. Watch: Palestinian Freedom Conference – Overcoming the Ongoing Nakba (Dublin, May 2018)

On 12th and 23th May 2018, to mark the 70th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Trade Union Friends of Palestine and BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency and Refugee Rights were honoured to host an inspiring and action-focused weekend of talks from important voices in the Palestinian struggle for Freedom, Justice and Equality. NUJ Dublin Broadcasting Branch commits to supporting members refusing to cover Eurovision Song Contest in Israel

The Irish Campaign to Boycott the Eurovision in 2019 in Israel welcomes the motion passed by the Dublin Broadcasting Branch of the NUJ on 29th January whereby it states it “will support any member, working in RTÉ or elsewhere, who chooses to exercise a conscientious objection towards involvement in coverage of the song contest.” The motion was passed by a large majority and represents a recognition that the Eurovision contest in Israel presents serious ethical issues for anyone who cares about human rights. The following letter was sent to the Office of the Taoiseach in December 2018. Subject: Double Standards and Ireland’s human rights obligations re: Palestine and Israel On 13th November 2018 Richard Boyd Barrett TD asked Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to condemn Israeli acts of aggression in Gaza. These acts led to the deaths of 14 people – 12 of them at the hands of Israeli forces.  Amongst widespread Israeli bombing, a TV station was destroyed, a university building and  human rights centre damaged.  Clear attacks on civilian infrastructure against the laws of war. Minister of State and 50 Irish lawmakers call for arms embargo on Israel

In a letter published today in the Irish Times newspaper, Minister of State Finian McGrath and fifty other Irish TDs and Senators have called for an arms embargo to be placed on Israel, and for “an end to the bi-lateral arms trade between Ireland and the apartheid state”. 20 more public figures join Irish Eurovision boycott campaign as RTE announces call for submissions

The Irish Campaign to boycott the Eurovision in Israel 2019, has secured the support of a further 20 public figures including actor Stephen Rea, and musical artists Mary Coughlan, Luka Bloom and the members of Kíla , have called on RTÉ not to participate and for musicians not to make submissions to the contest. The news comes just days after the Irish National Broadcaster RTÉ announced its call for entrants for the song contest. Mike Murphy, Mary Black, Christy Moore, Charlie McGettigan, Mary Coughlan, Luka Bloom and Robert Ballagh are among 141 international artists who signed a letter supporting the Palestinian call for a boycott of Eurovision 2019 due to be hosted in Israel.
